Lace Making

What is Lace Making?
Lace making in India is a fine textile craft that creates open, patterned fabric structures through hand-knotting, looping and net-based embroidery techniques. At VISHH, we collaborate with lace-making communities - including fillet lace and hand-net embroidery clusters in southern India - to develop delicate textile surfaces for fashion, interiors and spatial design projects.
Our role is to translate highly detailed, community-based craft into structured production systems - ensuring handcrafted lace can move from sampling into reliable, small-batch and project-scale manufacturing.

Regional Origins & Craft Heritage
Lace traditions in southern India developed through community-based production models, where artisans work on netted bases to create geometric and floral motifs. Fillet lace techniques combine knotted net structures with hand embroidery, producing surfaces that balance openness with intricate detail.
These regional practices continue to shape how lace is interpreted in contemporary textile and spatial applications.

Materials & Technical Process
The process begins with creating or sourcing a netted base fabric. Artisans then hand-embroider motifs into the open grid using fine threads, building pattern density and visual rhythm across the surface.
Thread choice, stitch tension and motif scale determine both durability and transparency, requiring careful planning for production use.

Applications in Contemporary Design & Hospitality
At VISHH, we can apply lace making across:
-
Decorative wall textiles and panels
-
Soft furnishings and layered surfaces
-
Lighting diffusers and spatial screens
-
Apparel and accessory textiles
In hospitality environments, lace introduces visual lightness, pattern layering and material delicacy into guest-facing spaces.

From Sampling to Small-Batch Production
VISHH manages:
-
Motif development and stitch mapping
-
Thread sourcing and material testing
-
Prototype development and quality trials
-
Batch planning and finishing standards
This ensures lace elements remain consistent and suitable for architectural and interior applications.

Working with Designers, Architects & Brands
We collaborate on custom pattern development, scale testing and installation feasibility - ensuring lace-based concepts translate reliably into spatial and product design systems.
