Dhurrie Weaving

What is Dhurrie Weaving?

Dhurrie weaving in India is a flatweave textile tradition that produces durable, reversible floor coverings using cotton, wool and natural fibres. At VISHH, we collaborate with weaving clusters to develop dhurries and woven surface textiles for hospitality, interior and product-based projects.

Our role is to bridge traditional floor textile craftsmanship with contemporary production systems - ensuring handwoven dhurries can move from sampling into reliable, small-batch and project-scale manufacturing.

Regional Origins & Craft Heritage

Dhurrie traditions are associated with weaving regions known for bold geometry, colour blocking and structural clarity. Regional variations influence yarn thickness, pattern layout and weaving density, shaping how dhurries perform in different architectural and interior environments.

These regional identities continue to guide how dhurries are used in contemporary spatial design.

Materials & Technical Process

The process begins with yarn preparation and loom setup, where warp threads are stretched tightly to form the structural base. Artisans interlace weft threads by hand to create flat, tightly packed surfaces without pile.

Pattern formation is controlled through colour placement and weaving sequence, producing strong geometric or linear compositions.

Applications in Contemporary Design & Hospitality

At VISHH, we can apply dhurrie weaving across:

  • Floor coverings and area rugs

  • Wall-mounted textile panels

  • Upholstery and soft architectural surfaces

  • Spatial zoning elements in interior

In hospitality environments, dhurries introduce material grounding, visual structure and handcrafted warmth into guest-facing spaces.

From Sampling to Small-Batch Production

VISHH manages:

  • Pattern scale testing and colour planning

  • Yarn sourcing and loom scheduling

  • Prototype development and durability testing

  • Batch planning and finishing standards

This ensures dhurries remain consistent and commercially viable across multi-unit and project-based production.

Working with Designers, Architects & Brands

We collaborate on custom patterns, size formats and material feasibility - ensuring dhurrie-based concepts integrate reliably into architectural and interior systems.
