What is Bidri?

Bidri ware in India is a traditional metal craft known for its deep blackened surface and intricate silver inlay work. At VISHH, we collaborate with specialist metal artisans to develop bidri-based objects, architectural accents and decorative installations for hospitality, interior and product-based projects.

Our role is to translate this highly skilled inlay tradition into contemporary design and structured production systems - ensuring handcrafted bidri elements can move from sampling into reliable, small-batch and project-scale manufacturing.

Regional Origins & Craft Heritage

Bidri ware is historically associated with specific craft regions in southern India, where metal inlay traditions developed distinctive visual languages using contrast, geometry and fine line work. Motifs often draw from architectural patterns, botanical forms and cultural symbolism.

These regional practices continue to shape how bidri is interpreted in modern interior and spatial design contexts.

Materials & Technical Process

The process begins with casting objects in a zinc-based alloy. Artisans engrave intricate patterns into the surface and manually inlay fine silver wire or sheet into the carved grooves. The piece is then treated with a natural soil-based solution that oxidizes the metal, turning the surface deep black while leaving the silver inlay bright and contrasting.

This process requires precision, material knowledge and controlled finishing at every stage.

Applications in Contemporary Design & Hospitality

At VISHH, we can apply bidri ware across:

  • Decorative objects and tableware

  • Architectural accents and panels

  • Feature lighting components

  • Sculptural and spatial installations

In hospitality environments, bidri elements introduce visual contrast, craftsmanship detail and a sense of material heritage into guest-facing spaces.

From Sampling to Small-Batch Production

VISHH manages:

  • Design translation and inlay mapping

  • Alloy casting and surface testing

  • Prototype development and finishing trials

  • Batch planning and quality benchmarks

This ensures bidri elements remain consistent and structurally sound across limited-run and project-based production.

Working with Designers, Architects & Brands

We collaborate on custom motifs, scale testing and installation feasibility - ensuring bidri-based concepts integrate reliably into architectural and interior systems.
